Eventide Melody

imaginarygarden get listed – July Imagined By

For this edition of get listed, see if you can bring the sounds of summer to the page – something missing, or maybe something just waiting to get noticed again. Please use at least 3 of these words (or reasonable variants): heat, bird, easy, fling, pass, sweat, corn, float, ice cream (that’s considered one), bright, cricket, dusk

Just at dusk, the heat turned down to bearable,
the bats come out of the attic and other dark places
darting, diving, in deranged flight chasing the skeeters,
gnats and moths, sating hunger in frenetic motion
and echolocation. Too high pitched, just a faint click,
and the drama goes on, to my ears, in almost silence.
In the far woods an owl whoos, another answers.
Mourning doves coo their melancholy song as a male
cardinal slashes the sky crying “Pretty, Pretty, Pretty.”
The easy sounds of summer comfort me like a lullaby.

  1. lovely snapshot of the sounds and moments when it is neither day nor night – and as the world hangs in between, the breath held in inhalation and silence – it all comes alive, as endings and beginnings – the heart beat slow exhale as the nocturnal dance spring-steps in – just wonderful!

  2. Night creatures are just so intriguing, especially bats. It annoys me that some people dislike them. I enjoyed the sounds in this poem, Debi: the faint click, the almost silence, owl, dove and cardinal sounds – you’ve summed it up perfectly:
‘The easy sounds of summer comfort me like a lullaby’.

  3. I love bats and owls. You captured the time of dusk perfectly esp. with the cardinal and it’s pretty pretty pretty call. I always thought they said pretty as well. The last line in this seals this perfect poem with peace.
